Surprisingly, the most famous of Volkswagen vehicles is not the automaker’s highest-selling vehicle. VW has sold 8 million more Golfs than they have Beetles over the years, bringing the total number of Golf vehicles sold to 29 million units.
For 2013, the seventh generation model has been introduced with an excellent new redesign and a couple entirely new versions of the hatchback. VW has unveiled the BlueMotion diesel and a GTI concept which are both very near full production. New features in the Golf for 2013 include new safety systems like multi-collision braking, state-of-the-art infotainment, reduced weight and an 18% decrease in fuel consumption.
The diesel-fueled BlueMotion has a direct-injected, 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine, and is said to be 15% more efficient than the outgoing turbo model. Specs on the GTI were not released along with the other information except for the fact that it provides 217 horsepower. Volkswagen’s home country will get ahold of these first, letting us Americans feel the anticipation.
